Possum boxes

"A Fair Go For Possums"

Spare a thought for the often-denigrated possum. Their native habitat has been destroyed by the relentless spread of urbanisation and never truer than in the Peel which is experiencing exponential population growth. Little wonder is it that the poor old, displaced possum may find itself inadvertently in your roof cavity.

Possum boxes built by the Mandurah Men Shed

Mandurah Wildlife working with the Mandurah Men’s Shed, may have a solution. I met with Trevor Howard at the Men’s Shed and he told me that his organisation is increasingly seeking funding to execute community projects. One of these projects is to build possum boxes for the Mandurah Wildlife Centre.

Volunteer, Trish Harris, said ‘There is a great need to provide safe habitats for possums and therefore, there is a demand for boxes’.

No need to expel possums from your roof space

A core message from Mandurah Wildlife is that you don’t need to trap and expel possums! They will often quite happily take to a wooden box affixed to a nearby tree trunk.

And remember, possums are very territorial so trapping a possum and releasing somewhere else is not a happy outcome for the animal.
