All Cleaned Up and Safe, Thanks to Stumps West and Watts Hire

Being located in a natural bush setting and needing to provide Browse to the animals in our care, our site needs constant maintenance to deal with the build up of branches, leaf matter and dead browse.

What is Browse?

It is the natural vegetation that our wildlife uses to climb, perch in, feed from and hydrate. Some species even use vegetation to bathe. The Wildlife Centre uses large amounts of browse all year long, but just like fresh flowers in your home, when browse is cut and placed in with the animals it eventually dies and needs to be discarded.

When the Browse Starts to Pile Up

Especially during the busier months, it is challenging for our volunteers to keep up with the many tasks required to maintain the property in a safe condition. As we are continually short of volunteers, nearly all available time is dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured wildlife, leaving little capacity for essential grounds maintenance. As a result, discarded browse and vegetation can quickly accumulate, increasing the fire risk, and creating tripping hazards around our pathways and aviaries.

Stumps West and Watts Hire to the Rescue

After a request for advice from one of our volunteers, Monique Welbing, Matt from Stumps West, offered to give us a hand. He contacted Gary, from Watts Hire who also offered assistance.

Over two days Matt, Monique and our Board member Ann Biggins, moved and managed tree trunks, branches and browse. Piles were created for safe DFES prescribed burn offs and plans put in place so burn offs will not be necessary in the future.

Watts Hire supplied a battery powered front end loader, which allowed Matt to move around the property quietly and not cause distress to the animals. An enormous advantage for a wildlife rehabilitation centre.

Helping to set up a Browse Mulching Station at Mandurah Wildlife

As part of this project, we decided to create a dedicated mulching station so that old browse can be recycled instead of piling up or needing to be burnt. Matt has already given our volunteers some hands-on training in using the mulcher we currently have and has generously offered to return regularly to tackle the bigger branches that need a professional touch. The only catch? According to Matt, we've outgrown our little mulcher, it looks like a bigger one is now on the wish list!
